COTT0~1d00D POLE PLANTING P.ECO*iMENDATIONS
B}• Carl Zimmerman
Re-vegetation of areas with native cottonwoods in }+'estern
Colorado have shown success in areas where-static w•atertables
occur within 3 to 9 feet of the soil surface.
Planting materials should be harti•ested from dog hair stands
taking material that is growing rapidly with a basal diameter ~
from 2 to 5 inches. Harvest must be done prior to break in ~'~~'• 7=- ~•,-,
dormancy. Lengths will be dependent upon planting depth. Cutting
should be done within six inches of the ground if re-sprouting
is not desirable.
All cuts should be made with a sterile instrument disin-
fected in a solution of Chlorox to prevent spread and contami-
nation of bacterial diseases. Prune all lateral branches, using
an instrument that makes clean cuts, above the collar area.
Remove terminal bud from the pole. Soak planting stock in a
solution of eater and Rootone F, following label directions,
from 3 to 7 da}•s. Before placing poles into the solution, make
a fresh cut 2 inches above the original cut to expose fresh
xylem if any time has elapsed between initial cut and placement
into soak barrel. The soak barrel should be large enough to
allow at least tw•o feet of the poles to be submerged.
then transporting planting stock from soaking barrel to
planting site, care should be taken to prevent the soaked ends
from deh}•drating. Cover with wet cloth or peat moss and crap
in plastic if necessary. ?lasting holes should be dug to a
depth of at least 1 foot be'_ow the static w•atertable. Eefore
placing the pole in [he planting hole, injure the bark to the
cambium la}•er in 7 or 3 places laterally along the stump within
2 feet of the basal end. l; en backfilling, caution should be
taken to eliminate alI air pockets and voids. Fill to a le1•e1
slightly above original ground level. Stump should be exposed
no more than 2 feet above ,round level and protected from rodents
and grazing animals.
l~'hen tree growth reaches 6 feet, a leader should be selected
and all ct,`,er s~,rcrs pr u.-.ed to cield to a main branch. Again;
when pruning use a sharp, sterile pruning instrument and prune
branches above the collar,
