that the ultimate settled height of the tailings would be
• approximately 2 inch per lift and the total accumulated
tailings was contained in the column. Since drained tailings
liquor was allowed to accumulate at the top of the tailings,
placement of the second and third lifts was accomplished
underwater.
Values of density and saturated moisture content were
calculated for each of the lifts deposited into the column as
well as for the total deposit. For the column with single
drainage (top) the calculated values attained ar•e as follows:
Lift No. Lift Saturated Total Saturated
Density Moisture Density Moisture
Content Content
(PCF) (Y.) (PCF) (%)
1 76.2 45.2 -- --
2 74.9 46.6 75.5 45.9
3 73.5 48.1 74.9 46.6
• 1.1.2 Bottom Drainage Column
As in the previous column the quantity of tailings placed
in the column was calculated to produce lifts of uniform
thickness. The tailings were placed in the column and drainage
was allowed to occur in both directions (top and bottom).
Subsequently the second and third lifts were placed on top of
drained tailings solids.
The calculated values of density and saturated moisture
content attained are as follows:
