Lamm
Governor
DATE: December 5, 1984
T0: Bob Liddle
FROM: Jim Pendleton -
RE: Geotechnic de cy - Mt. Gunnison # 1 Technical Revision Application
- Exhaust ortal Installation
Pursuant to your request, I have reviewed the technical revision application
recently submitted by West Elk Coal Company for the installation of an exhaust
fan portal at its Mt. Gunnison # 1 underground coal mine. This fan is to be
installed at the existing test mine adit portal located in Sylvester Gulch.
This fan site is preferred by the operator because of its preexiting
disturbance, existing light use road, and topographic and geolog~,s
characteristics.
In completing my adequacy review, I have discerned one general geotechnical
deficiency which will require resolution. Section 3.0, entitled "Construction
Plan", fails to present adequate information regarding the exact nature of the
earthwork being proposed. The applicant should provide clarification
regarding the anticipated fan pad's cut and fill cross-section, the fill
material nature and source, the facial slope maximum height and facial angle,
and the specific construction material placement and compaction standards to
be adhered with.
cc: Mike Long
/md
Doc.
