The graph for the GLUX-1 ground water data is distinctly different. The well was not installed until
1988 and it was finished in the aquifer above the F seam. The GLUX-1 well was installed to monitor
groundwater level and quality in the same aquifer that the Lux well is finished in. The water level
elevation in the GLUX-1 well has gradually decreased since 1988. It, however, does not exhibit a
pattem consistent with surface mining impacts. Trapper Mining, Inc. measured the water level of the
GLUX-1 well on February 19, 2002. The Water Level Elevation in February 2002 was 6254.62 ft.-
MSL. This water level elevation is consistent with previous measurements. The pattem observed with
the GLUX-1 Well water elevation is consistent with non-mining related aquifer drawdown.
In response to your question, water quality graphed on Figures B-8 and B-17 show very little change to
the GLUX- I well water quality over the 13 years of data.
It maybe of interest to know that, Trapper Mining, Inc. reported in the 2001 Annual Hydrology Report
that the annual precipitation for 2001 was less than normal at 13.14 inches. Trapper Mining, Int.'s
report stated that the last four years of precipitation, 1998-2001, have been lower than normal, based
upon Trapper's annual precipitation records collected since 1978.
The Division agrees with Trapper Mining Inc.'s Cross-section that depicts the ls` White Sandstone as
hydrologically isolated from mining by low-permeability underlying shale units. The presence of the 151
Shale, that immediately underlies the ls` White Sandstone, keeps the water in that aquifer from
percolating down deeper below the F seam.
After review of the geologic stratigraphy and the historic water monitoring records, the Division
concludes that the reduction in flow of the Lippard No. 2 Spring is most likely not caused by Trapper
Mining, Inc.'s surface mining of pits B and C. I am planning to meet with you on Apri123, 2002 on
site.
