<br />The purpose of the TES species survey was to comply with the Endangered Species Act <br />of 1973, as amended. As such, the objectives of the survey were as follows: <br />1. Compile a list of federally or state listed TES or candidate species potentially <br />occurring in the proposed project azea. <br />2. Provide a physical and biological description of the project area. <br />3. Determine the presence of federally and state listed TES or candidates species in <br />the project area. Determine the presence of critical habitat for listed and <br />candidate species in the project area. <br />4. Assess potential impacts the proposed action may have on any TES or candidate <br />species, or critical habitat, present in the project azea. <br />5. Inventory invasive weeds located within the proposed project area. <br />6. Assess potential impacts on wildlife resources in the area. <br />2.0 LOCATION <br />The TES survey was conducted on private land in La Plata County, Colorado. The <br />proposed project azea is located in the High Flume Canyon vicinity approximately 11.7 <br />miles south of Durango, Colorado and can be located on the Long Mountain 7.5-minute <br />U.S. Geological Survey topographic quadrangle map. A project area map is provided in <br />Appendix A. The coordinates for the proposed High Flume gravel pit expansion project <br />are as follows: <br />Township 33 North, Range ]0 West <br />Section 14 <br />New Mexico Principal Meridian <br />La Plata County, Colorado <br />3.0 AFFECTED ENVIRONMENT <br />The proposed project area is situated on the top of a 400-foot tall mountain overlooking <br />the Animas Valley at elevations ranging from 6,270 feet at the gravel stockpile area to <br />6,520 at the [op of the proposed gravel pit. The proposed pit expansion and stockpile <br />area aze located on mild slopes (0 to 3 percent). Slopes along the gravel chute pipe and <br />southern edge range from 30 to 50 percent. <br />The geology of the area consists of the shale and sandstone of the Nacimiento Formation. <br />There are no prominent geologic features (i.e. rock formations, caves, cliffs, etc.) along <br />or immediately adjacent to the proposed gravel pit expansion area.
