Limited-Results Cultural Resource Survey Form
(page Z of 4)
III. Project Location
Please attach a photocopy of USGS Quad. cleazly showing the project location. The Quad. should be clearly labeled with
the Principal Meridian, Township, Range, Section(s), Quad. map name, and date. Please do not reduce or enlarge the
photocopy.
14. Description: Location AAA is located on the northern neck of West Flatiron approximately one-half mile
east of the head of Box Canyon and about one and one-half mile south of the North Fork Gunnison River.
Location BBB is on the east side of West Faltiron about one-half mile south of the narrow base of the flat
topped ridge where AAA is located.
15. Legal Location: Quad. Map: Somerset Date(s): 1964 Photorevised 1978
Principal Meridian: 6th X NM _ Ute _
NOTE: Only generalized subdivision (quarter-quarters) within each section is needed.
Township: 13 South Range: 90 West Sec.: 14 '/.s: SE/SE
Township: 13 South Range: 90 West Sec.: 23 ''/,s: W/NE/NE; E/NW/NE; NW/SE
Township: 13 South Range: 90 West Sec.: 24 'hs: W/NW/SW
Township: Range: Sec.: '/,s:
Usection(s) is/are irregular, explain alignment method: for irregular section line between sections 23 and 24,
the template was anchored on the half section brasscap location
16. Total number of acres surveyed: 55
17. Comments: Surface visibility was exceelent for these locations, but sporadic oak and brush copses and
stands of large trees impeded reeular linear transects
IV. ENVII20NMENT
18. General Topographic Setting: open mesa top of Flatiron
Current Land Use: grazing leases and recreation
19. Flora: AAA -tall but dispersed ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, juniper (both arborescent and shrubby) with
open understory of scrub oak, sagebrush, snowberry, other shrubs, grasses and fortis
BBB -Stands of scrub oak and shrubs and open sagebrush meadow. Both areas are heavily grazed.
20. Soils/Geology: light brown shallow residual silty loam on massive tabular sandstone with occassional
metamorphic pebbles -the underlying bedrock of the mesa is Paleocene and Eocene sandstone, claystone,
mudstone and conglomerate of the Wasatch Formation.
21. Ground Visibility: Ground surface visibility at the time of survey was very good to excellent (80-100%)
22. Comments: Survey conditions were excellent. The mesa ridge top area was open and provided excellent
visibility. However, prior to construction of stock ponds, there appears to have been no reliable source of
water, and the mesa is bounded by rugged slopes and sheer sandstone cliffs. The principle resources appear
to be game (elk, deer, bear, and small game), berries, and acorns.
V. LITERATURE REVIEW
23. Location of Files Search: Colorado Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation Date: 10/06/98
24. Previous Survey Activity
In the project area: 1995 and 1996 surveys in immediate vicinity by author for earlier core holes
In the general region: Several surveys along river valley to north for highway improvements and mine
development, small surveys in the Gunnison National Forest for coal exploration and related access roads,
and similar exploration farther east on the north side of the West Elk Mountains. Generally small surveys
with most historic and prehistoric sites found along the river valleys and principal drainages.
