Environmznta! Planners. Scientists. and Engineers
November 2, 1998
Wendell Koontz
Mountain Coal Company
PO Box 591
Somerset, CO 81434
RE: Cultural resource surveys for exploratory core holes on West Flatiron and the the Sunset Trail
Exploration Area.
Deaz Mr. Koontz,
Enclosed find two copies each of limited results cultural resource survey forrns for core holes AAA and
BBB on West Flatiron, and SST #6 and #7 in the Sunset Trail Exploration area. We inspected a large area
around each of these proposed locations -- essentially all of the nearby level to gently sloping terrain -- to
allow for work areas or adjustments to location without the need for additions) cultural resource survey.
The only cultural resource found was a log ferlCe north of SST #6. This fence is a post and log construction
style that is commonly associated in the West with "public works" projects done by the Civilian
Conservation Corps or Army Corps of Engineers beginning in the 1930s. However, there is nothing about
the materials or construction of this fence to indicate that it predates the 1950s. I consulted with Sally
Cnun, the Collbran Ranger District azchaeologist, and we decided that there was no curie at this time to
record this fence. When the opportunity arises, one of us will check the Forest Service records to see if
we can find a date of construction for the fence, most likely for a grazing allotment. However, if the fence
will not be impacted by the coring operation, there is no immediate concern. )f the fence toms out to be
more than fifty yeazs old, it is badly deteriorated and unlikely to be significant. No other cultural resources
were found, and cultural resource clearance is recommended. Copies of this report have also been
forwarded to the Collbran Ranger District.
If you have any questions or require any further materials, do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
</~
Carl Spath, PhD
Senior Archaeologist
xc: Sally Crum, Collbran Ranger District, Collbran, CO
5231 South Quebec Street • Greenwood Village, Colorado 80111
Phone (303) 850-0930 • Far (303) 721-9298
