The mine was last active from 1990 to
1992, though the surrounding community strictly opposed the operation.
Though I agree that our dirt road aze in need of constant repair, the gravel provided by this pit is
very poor road base (as admitted by the Main Operator) and other mines within Elbert County
provide better road base.
Moreover, the impact of their previous mining was tremendous, and only will be magnified
going forward. Impacts included:
• Erosion of the hillside as the County did not adequately pmtect it.
• Debris and trash from the site was washed down the Bijou Creek from the site to adjacent
landowners.
• Destruction of several acres of trees, which were tens of years old. (And the County did not
replant trees when the "reclaimed" the ]and.)
• Excessive dust floating over the crop fields, trees, and into ow houses from the Hauling
Trucks driving on the roads. Not to mention the danger factor of those trucks driving SOmph
down the roads.
• Relocation of wildlife due to the noise pollution and ecological destruction.
Thus, the cost/benefit does not prove to positive for neighbors of our community. We aze putting
a petition together for the Elbert County Commissioners and the Colorado Mined Land
Reclamation Division. In addition, several community members aze writing letters to both.
Please contact me soon if you are concerned With this matter. /~
Best sonal regazds, t/C~~t-i~ t--l~/ Ut/~~
