i~
Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company November 13, 2003
Mr. Ron Roberts -4- 003-2203
Previous analyses for the Phase N VLF were modeled with a friction angle of 18 degrees with zero
adhesion for the textwed geomembrane/soil liner fill interface, as outlined in Amendment 8; therefore
the samples with bentonite addition aze consistent with the design basis for the VLF.
Liner Load Testing
Geomembrane liner load testing was conducted on sample ALT-TP-11 amended with 3 percent
I ~ bentonite (by dry weight) in February 2003 under an applied pressure of 450 pounds per square inch
(psi) to simulate load under approximately 600 feet of ore. The liner load test report is included in
Appendix A. The clay liner material was compacted to 95 percent of the maximum dry density at
moisture content 3 percent below optimum. At the conclusion of the test, the liner was inspected and
tested for punctures both visually and by applying a vacuum (vacuum pressure of 70 mm Hg
[2.76 in Hg]). The liner load test passed both visual and vacuum inspections.
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Based on laboratory testing conducted on soil samples from the East Cresson Mine borrow source,
the soil can be used for construction of the Phase IV VLF based on the recommendations outlined in
the following table.
i

;J

Source Compaction = : Moisture , Bentonite
`' S eci£cat~on "- S ecification ;, ~ :Addition `
East Cresson Mine Min. 95% -3 to +3% of +3% by dry
area ASTM D698 OMC~ wei t
OMC refers to the optimum moisture content.
It is important to note that the moisture specification of +/- 3 percent of the optimum moisture content
is different from the current compaction specification for SLF.
CLOSING
Thank you for the opportunity to work on this project. If you have any questions, or if we can be of
further assistance, please contact the undersigned at (303)980-0540.
Sincerely,
GOLDER ASSOCIATES INC.
i John F.
