Long
Urvniun Direnrrt
Re: Deserado Min (C-81-018): Renewal No. 2
Adequacy Concerns
I have reviewed the following materials for permit renewal for the Deserado Mine.
Permit Sections: III. A., III. B., IV. A., IV. D., [V. L, IV. J., IV. M., V. D., V.
E., V. G.- V. K.
Proposed Revised Pages corresponding with above listed sections.
PR-03 Findings Document dated January 17, 1992.
Findings Document dated February 28, 1986.
Comments
• New pg. III-31 refers to construction of the refuse piles. Unless it's already been
addressed, this may be an appropriate time and location to have Western Fuels-Utah
commit to compaction testing frequency and procedure.
• New pg IV.-21 discusses having 120 acres actively in use at the refuse piles at one
time. They have been approved for 50 acres open at the refuse areas at one time
(approved permit pages IV.-28). I'm not sure but I think the 50 acre limit was set
by BLM. This may need some looking into. Does BLM need to grant this increase
as well.
• There is a defined start and end to the refuse area #1 vegetation study so we should
avoid a Roadside scenario. The study area was seeded in 1990, and final vegetation
data will be collected in the summer of 1995.
