Dudash
Environmental Protection Specialist
Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver. Colorado 80203
RECEIVED
AUG 1 4 1998
Dear Mr. Dudash:
This responds to your July 8. 1998, letter requesting information relating to
federally listed species associated with expansion of the Bowie No. 2 Mine
(permit number C-96-083) near Paonia, Colorado.
The following federally listed species should be considered during your
evaluation of the potential effects of the mine expansion.
Federally Listed Species
Colorado squawfish Ptychocheilus Lucius
Razorback sucker Xyrauchen texanus
Humpback chub Gila cypha
Bonytail Gila elegans
Southwestern willow flycatcher Empidonax traillii extimus
The federally listed fish species occur in the Gunnison and Colorado Rivers
downstream of the mine, and are dependent on adequate flows in these rivers to
complete their life cycle. Any net depletion of water resulting from the
proposed expansion is an adverse affect to these species, and will trigger
Endangered Species Act consultation requirements with this office. The
Division of Minerals and Geology should therefore determine whether the
expansion requires water, and if so, how much water will not return to the
North Fork of the Gunnison, and represent a net depletion from the system.
The depletion should be calculated in acre-feet per year over the life of the
project.
