Mine will instead sample regraded spoil and report the results to the Division
annually by January 30th. Spoil sampling procedures will be as follows: com-
posite samples will be taken on 50 to 100 centers for each mapping unit. Mapping
units are determined by visual and textural differences of surface spoils. A
minimum sampling density of approximately one sample per five acres of reclaim _
area will be accomplished. Each sample will be a composite from at least one
foot into the spoil material. Samples will be analyzed in accordance with para-
meters described in Table 2.7-2a. Final mapping units will be presented on a
spoil history map. Each delineation of this map will be identified as to year
sampled, texture, and lab analysis number(s).
If spoil sampling results indicate a potential problem, on any reclaimed area
regraded after 1987, the Division will be notified via the annual report. Reme-
dial action to correct problems may include any of the following practices: 1)
resample problematic area to validate problem; 2) sample vegetation to determine
extent of the problem (may include laboratory analysis). When a problem area has
been identified and verified by follow-up sampling and analysis, Trapper will
submit a plan to the Division fur approval which will mitigate [he problem.
The replacement of lower litho logical strata on the spoil surface which have
higher than desired mineral content may be of Little concern from a reclamation
standpoint. The lithological core sampling conducted by Stearns-Roger and
Trapper Mine indicate that few overburden strata have poor chemical and physical
properties and are generally adjacent to strata having good to moderate chemical
and physical properties. The mixing of regrade surfaces during spoil regrading
is of primary importance to ensure adequate subsoil composition. As discussed
previously, Trapper will monitor surface spoil properties through a yearly spoil
sampling program. The annual report will demonstrate that a surface spoil layer
has been replaced with acceptable physical and chemical properties. With the
addition of suitable topsoil, these reclaimed spoils provide a suitable medium to
promote plant growth and successful reclamation.
2-361b
REVISED DEC 8 '87
