e 2
• ibit I
Cover on the natural areas averages about 75% although it appears
much greater. The bunchiness of Crested Wheatgrass gives an illusion
of high cover values while the actual cover values are somewhat
low for this relatively rich soil, especially if compared to totally
natural areas where a cover of 90% on Satanta soils is not unusual.
The cover in the shrubland areas averages about 90% not including
ground areas covered by rock outcrops and boulders. If the rocks are
included, then the cover becomes highly variable depending on the scale
of the area examined. If the entire Stony Steep land area is examined
then cover average about 50%, but ranges from 0% to 100% depending
upon the scale of examination.
On disturbed areas, cover ranges from 0% to about 30%. The amount
of cover is dierectly related to the age of the substrate, that is,
older areas have higher cover than fresh areas. It appears that with
weedy species, a fair protective cover of disturbed areas is acheived
In two or three growing seasons, even on steep slopes.
