UNITED STATES DakRTMENT OF AGRICULTURE •
SOIL CONSERVATION SERVICE 318 4th Street, Castle Rock, CO 80104
Fertilization rates will be according to what soil tests recommend but
not less than 40 pounds available Nitrogen and Phosperous per acre.
A follow-up application of fertilizer a year of two following seeding
is also recommended. After fertilizing, the seedbed will be smoothed
and firmed.
The method of seeding will depend on the amount of coarse rock fragments
in the regraded surface layer. Drilling is the preferred method, but if
too many rock fragments are encountered the seed will have to be broad-
cast. If broadcasting is the method chosen then after broadcasting, the
area will be dragged to cover the seed to 1/2 - 3/4 inch depth.
Rates applied will be according to the attached co-cons-6 form. These -
rates are for broadcasting. If drilling is used then these rates will
be halved.
It is important that all these operations be done in the proper sequence,
within a short period of time, and at the right time of the year. Timing
should be such that no regraded area is left bare throughout the entire
winter.
Mulching: After seeding, a mulch of native prairie hay at 40000/acre
will be applied. This mulch must be anchored in place by means of a
crimper or a tackifier, such as asphalt, which is applied with the
mulch. The use of a crimper will be dependent on the amount of crushed
rock that occurs in the regraded surface layers. Other mulchers may be
used provided they meet SCS Standards and Specifications.
Snrub and Tree Planting: After mulching is complete, shrubs and/or trees
will be planted adjacent to the lsl slopes for erosion control and
aesthetics. Containerized seedlings are recommended. Shrubs must be
planted at 5-6 foot spacings and trees must be planted at 11-12 foot
spacings. Scattered plantings of additional shrubs on the 5:1 slopes
are also recommended.
The shrubs and trees may need supplemental water the first growing season
to ensure establishment. A list of approved shrubs and trees is attached.
 e
CL
O26
r
