•~~ The soil moisture data correspond closely to the observed precipi-
tation patters. For the first two sampling periods (May 3, 17), 15Z or
more moisture vas recorded at all depths within the treatments sampled
(Appendix B).
- By May'31, some differences were noted in soil moisture levels
among treatments. The north-facing 2:1 slope treatments shored more
eater present near the surface than south-facing 2:1 treatments. Near-
surface moisture (5 ® depth) in 2:1 north-facing treatments vas highest
tinder excelsior mulch (15Z), follwed by hydromuleh (12Z), and the
control (<12Z). However, on south-facing 2:1 slopes the excelsior
treatment vas drier deeper is the profile than the hydromuleh and control
treatments. Soil moisture levels oa the 2:1 west-faeisg slopes were
similar to those on 2:1 north-facing slopes. The vest hydromulch treatment
vas drier on the surface than the excelsior treatment on the same vest
f
aspect. The north sad south 4:1 slope treatments were not analyzed
because of measurement errors (see soil temperature discussion)..
By Juae 14, all treatments were very dry at all depths. Calibration
of moisture blocks is topsoil and refuse material (Appendix C) indicate
that electrical resistances of 7 x 105 ohms are associated with soil
moisture levels of less thaw 5Z. The maximum resistance that can be
__ read from the ohmmeter is 2 a 10° ohms. Off-scale readings for nearly
all treatments were takes from Juae 14 through October 14, indicating
` that soil moisture levels were probably below SS throughout this period.
It is estimated that moisture percentage at saturation is approximately
27X for the topsoil and 33Z for the refuse material. These estimates
are based on the weight of water present is saturated soil enclosed is
4 calibration cells just after the cell is removed from a water bath.
.- 20
