• ' left band comer of the plot. The grid was modified to allw a .25 m
- buffer along the edges of each plot. Random number pairs were takes from
a random numbers table to locate a position on the vertical axis (First
digit) sad a point on the horizontal axis (second digit). The conjunctiaa
of the tvo points marked the lover left hand corner of the sampling
quadrat. The .5 m side of the quadrat was maintained parallel to the
long axis of the plot. This system vas modified for 2:1 plots because
of their smaller size. To prevent overlap of sampling waits, a 4 x 4
grid was used oa these plots. Pairs with digits greater than 4 were
rejected. Coordinates for each sampling unit were recorded. The lover
left hand corner of each quadrat vas marked with a nail sad as embossed
metal tag indicating the quadrat number. The upper right head corner of
the quadrat vas marked with a nail or flagged stake to permit accurate
resampliag.
Figure 2.7-2 shws the data sheet used for this study. Litter cover
(which includes mulch) was estimated on each plot.
2.7.4 Productivity Measurements
The same quadrats sampled for cover and density were.resampled for
productivity measurements. Vegetation in each quadrat vas clipped to
ground level and bagged according to the folloviag components: planted
grass, pleated forb, volunteer grass. volunteer forb, volunteer shrub.
"Volunteez" represents plants and seedlings present in the topsoil. Dpoa
return to the laboratory, plant matter vas dried for 24 hours at 105°C,
and they weighed to the nearest .O1 gram.
2.7.5 Shrub Transplants
Height of living containerized transplants vas recorded during
~.' October 1978. Shrub diameters were not recorded for containerized stock
13
