C. Related Environmental Documents
Bureau of Land Management, 1977. Northwest Colorado Coal
Environmental Statement.
The Colowyo Mine was included in this environmental
statement as a proposed project. Some of the impacts
associated with mining operations included:
- Recovery of 83.7 million tons of coal.
- - Possible saturation of Streeter Canyon fill soils,
which could lead to slope failures.
- Disturbance of 1,500 acres, with a permanent loss
of vegetation and wildlife habitat on 245 acres
due to the construction of roads and permanent
facilities.
- Reduction of 75 percent of the tree, shrub, and
forb vegetative components of herbage production,
with a corresponding increase in the grass
component.
Bureau of Land Management, 1983. Environmental Impact
Statement, Round Two, Green River-Hams Fork Coal Region.
This document analyzed the impacts of leasing 24
Federal lease tracts in southern Wyoming and northwest
Colorado. Expected impacts resulting from development
of the proposed lease tracts were compared to the
baseline impacts associated with current mining
operations in the region.
The following impacts were associated with development
of the 24 tracts: 1) increased salinity in the Green
and Colorado Rivers., 2) loss of big game winter
habitat, 3) loss of riparian habitat, 4) local
decreases in surface water quality, and 5) local
decreases in groundwater quality.
Office of Surface Mining, 1983, Environmental Assessment,
Colowyo Coal Mine.
This environmental assessment was prepared in
conjunction with a permit application submitted by'
Colowyo which would expand the permitted area by 1,100
acres, and would authorize operations under the
approved Colorado State Regulatory Program. Additional
impacts identified with the operation included the
removal of an additional 90 million tons of coal, and
disturbance of an additional 1,100 acres.
3
