Dacono loam, 0 to 1 percent slopes IDoA).-This soil
has the profile described s represeutative for the series.
It contains 5 to 15 percent gravel in the surface lacer
and subsoil, and it has a scud and gravel layer bettreen
depths of 20 and 40 iaches. Runoff is slop-. The hazard
of water erosimr is slight, but the hazard of soil blow-
ing is moderate if fields are not protected by crops or
residue. Included in mapping at•e some small areas of
Satana loam and a few small gravel spots.
Nearly all of this soil is cultivated and irrigated. The
soil is easy to till and is well suited to truck farming
(fig. 8). Capability trait IIIs-3, irrigated; not placed in
a range site; tree planting suitability group 1.
Dacono loam, I to 3 percent slopes IDoBI•-This soil
has a profile that is similar to file one described as rep-
resentative for the series, but it has a thinner surface
layer and subsoil. Runoff is medium, and the hazard of
water erosion is moderate. The hazard of soil blon•ing is
moderate in unprotected fields.
Most of the soil is cultivated and irrigated. Some of
the steeper areas are used for irrigated pasture. Cap-
ability unit IIIe-2, irrigated; not placed in a range site;
Deertrail Series
13
The Deerh•ail series cmtsists of well-drained, nearly
level soils on uplands. These soils formed in Ivind-de-
positcd loam}' material Lt _ldanr County, they occur
only in a complex With ll"eld soils.
In a represenuttire profile, the surface laver is light
grayish-brown cer\ fine sutdy loam and loam about
0 inches [hick. It is noncalcareous. The upper part of
the subsoil is brnn'n ant! light brow Wish-gi.~y clay about
L inches thin:. It is nmuulrrreous. "I'he lower part of
the subsoil is very pale brown ailty c(ay loam about I1
inches thick. It is highl}' salcnrcous, and much of the
lime is vis-iblc as streaks- and spots. The underlying ma-
terial, below a depth of 33 inches, is highly calcareous,
very pale bronn loam.
Deertrail soils absorb water slowly, and the available
Hater capacity is vet}' low. Perhicability- is slow. Roots
are confined mostly- to Uu• surface layer, and only a
few roots arc iu the subsoil.
