Natural Resource trustee
Technical Revision No. 47, Eliminate Emergency Spillway of Pond 11, Adequacy Review
Dear Mr. Stover:
The Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology (Division) has completed its adequacy review of
Technical Revision No. 47 (TR-47) for the Roadside Mine. The following are the Division's questions:
On revised Exhibit 55 of TR-47, a value of 0.27 acre-feet is used as the sediment storage volume
for Pond 11. However, on permit application page CRDA3-2, it is stated that 0.27 acre-feet is the
sediment storage volume for the 10 year-24 hour event. Since TR-47 involves the storage of the
runoff from the 25 year-24 hour event, it would seem more appropriate to use the sediment storage
volume from the 25 year-24 hour event. If you agree, please revise or add the appropriate values in
Exhibit 55 and on permit application text page CRDA3-2.
2. There are apparent discrepancies in the elevation-capacity listings for Pond 11 in the permit
application and in the TR-47 submittal. There is a pond elevation-capacity listing on permit
application page CRDA3-3 that appears to be based on the original pond capacity, before the pond
was enlarged. There is a second pond elevation-capacity listing on permit application page
CRDA3-4 that appears to be based on the enlarged capacity of Pond I I. However, these values do
not correspond to the digitized pond elevation-capacities generated from revised Exhibit 55
submitted for TR-47. Please clarify these discrepancies by revising the Sedcad computer run in the
permit application to reflect the elevation-capacities of the current pond configuration.
On pages CRDA3-2 through CRDA3-6, of the permit application, there are references to and
details of the emergency spillway for Pond 1 1. Please revise these pages through TR-47 to reflect
that Pond 11 will not have an emergency spillway.
If you have any questions, please call me.
Sincerely,
J sep J.
