Question - "What is the eventual fate of the water dischaz~ed to the tailings facility?"
Response -Ultimately, the pit water will be evaporated (except that which is retained in the
tailings material).
Question - "If it cannot be shown that all water will be evaporate, what will be the rate of
accumulation of water in the tailings facility?"
Response - No[e previous response.
Question - "What is the current location and frequency of groundwater monitoring of the tailings
facility'?"
Response -There aze seven monitoring wells down gradient of the tailings impoundment that are
sampled four times per year (quarterly).
Question - "How has/will monitoring be increased to account for this new and ottiginally
unanticipated use of the facility?"
Response -Monitoring has not been increased since the Division is confident thalt the existing
system for the impoundment is sufficient to detect potential contaminant releases from the
facility.
Question - "Consistent with the above discussion, what are the short term and lomg term costs
associated with disposal of water into the tailings facility?"
Response -The short tetm and long tetra costs depend upon the frequency of putnping and the
amount of water pumped. These variables are currently unknown.
Question - "How much surface azea does the free water pool in the tailings facility occupy?"
Response -Approximately 2.5 acres on November 30, 1999 (last time the site was inspected).
Question - "Has the surface azea of the free water pool changed since the dischazge from the
West Pit began?"
Response -Yes. The free water pool nearly completely covered the pond footprint
(approximately 23 acres) when BMRI stared dumping pit water into the impoundment.
Question - "How is the pond size monitored?"
Response -Visually.
Question - "Has drainage from the tailings pond area to the collection pond been monitored in
1999?"
