Lxhhead <br />E Kecunve Dueclar <br />M¢hael B Long <br />Division Director <br />The Division of Minerals and Geology hereby issues notice, in accordance with Title 34, Article 33, Section I I8, <br />Paragraph 3, of [he Colorado Revised S[atu[es, that on June 20, 1997, an application to renew and revise an existing <br />permit [o conduct coal mining operations a[ the Trapper Mine was considered complete for the purposes of filing. <br />All review and comment periods as provided in the Act and the Regulations initiate from this date of filing. <br />The applicant proposes to continue surface coal mining and reclamation operations on land located approximately <br />6 miles southwest of Craig, Colorado. The permit area is further described as follows: <br />Portions of Sections 5 and 6, Township 5 North, Range 90 West of the 6th P.M. <br />All or Portions of Sections I, 2, 3, 4'and 5, Township 5 North, Range 91 West of the 6th P.M. <br />All or Portions of Sections 30, 31 and 32, Township 6 Nonh, Range 90 West of the 6th P.M. <br />All or Portions of Sections 21, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 32, 33, 34, 35, and 36, Township 6 North, Range 91 West of the <br />6th P.M. <br />Projected activities include disturbing an additional 1,025 acres within the existing permit area to add new mine pits <br />and advance current pits. <br />Because the above referenced permit renewal/revision application would incorporate additional lands into the permit <br />area or might otherwise alter previously approved permit conditions or mitigation measures, we are requesting your <br />agency's evaluation of [he potential for impacts to threatened or endangered species of plants or animals, or wildlife <br />species otherwise protected by federal law. <br />In order for us to approve this renewal revision, we are required to make a finding that "the activities would not affect <br />the continued existence of endangered or threatened species or result in the destruction or adverse modification of <br />their critical habitats as determined under the Endangered Species Act of 1973...." We request your review and <br />recommendation pursuant to [his finding. Please advise us if you require additional information. <br />In order for us to comply with regulatory time frames, we request that comments be submitted to the Divls'lon of <br />Minerals and Geology at the above address by 5:00 p.m. on August 19, 1997.
