They
are:
1) Addition of about 20 acres t.o the permit boundary due to inadvertent mining past the
original boundary. Because disturbance of the 20 acre parcel has already taken place, we do
not know for sure what wildlife values may have been present there. However, judging from
the aerial photo of the surrounding area it is unlikely that high quality wildlife habitat was
present prior to mining activity encroaching. We do feel, however, that the applicant should
have been asked to submit a new wildlife statement with this amendment application because of
the increase in the project boundary.
2) Change in mining technique from wet mining to a combination including some dry
mining. While the mining technique used does not directly have any bearing on wildlife impacts
from the project, there could very well be indirect impacts to the trees bordering the South Platte
River just west of the mine due to dewatering activity. The trees present generally depend on
a high water table to survive. If pumping of groundwater to facilitate dry mining served to
lower the ground water in the azea of the trees, they might die. We feel it is important that this
not occur and urge that the western side of the property be wet-mined to avoid lowering of the
water table or some other measures be taken to assure that the valuable stream-side riparian
vegetation not be damaged.
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, James S.
