as concentration areas for both adults and juveniles. The White
River remains important as a flow contributor to downstream
fisheries and, as historic habitat, may contribute to future
recovery efforts. The White River and its 100-year floodplain from
Rio Blanco Lake to the Utah state line was designated by the USFWS
as critical habitat for all listed Colorado River fishes 20 April
1994. The designation encompasses physical or biological features
essential to the conservation and eventual recovery of the species.
Activities that may adversely affect these essential elements (i.e.
water depletions, degradation or adverse modification of physical
habitat and biological environment) and would likely warrant
additional scrutiny include non-native sport fish management and
those land uses that may lead to the deterioration of bank, channel
or floodplain function, alter flow volume or timing, or result in
aquatic contamination.
If you require more specific information or questions arise, please
don't hesitate to contact Rusty Roberts (plants) or Ed Hollowed
(animals) of my staff at 878-3601.
Sincerely,
John Mehlhoff
Area Manager
