I appreciate hearing from you.
The Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Act ensures that mining in this
state is done in an environmentally sound manner and that
reclamation of land disturbed by mining is accomplished properly.
The Mined Land Reclamation Board was established by the act to
review and approve or deny mining permits. The board also reviews
public health and safety issues and environmental issues concerning
the protection of soils, re-vegetation, re-establishing wildlife
habitat, protection of surfacewater and groundwater and other
technical issues. If the board finds that a mining operator cannot
comply with the act, it can deny the permit.
I understand the board will hold hearings on June 21, 1989, to
determine whether approval should be granted to Castle Concrete to
mine the additional area requested for Snyder Quarry. The hearings
will be held at 9:00 a.m. in the auditorium at the Denver Public
Library at 1357 Broadway in Denver. I have forwarded your letter to
the board so that it will be part of its public record on this
proposal.
The board does not have authority to approve or deny a mining permit
based on the project's compatibility with surrounding land uses and
local zoning. Local land-use decisions, such as whether an area
will be used for mining or recreation, are made by county and local
governments. For this reason, I suggest you also pursue your
concerns with your local county officials.
If you would like additional information concerning jurisdiction of
the board, you should contact Bruce Humphries, Mined Land
Reclamation Division, 1313 Sherman St., Room 215, Denver, CO
60203-2273.
Again, thank you for your interest.
Sincerely,
Roy Rome
Governor lll!//
~F ~~(
/ti4 ~~09
/\N >~
~ 8N e
~a-.n..
~ 18'!6 ~
ROY Romer
Governor
