The rock
(gypsum) has a very low porosity and permeability and has not been
found to contain any ground water. Some small caves have been
found in the rock which apparently follow old fracture lines.
These caves will carry run-off water at times, but have not, as
yet, been found to hold water.
Due to the steep slopes and sparse vegetation, storm run-off is
very rapid. Some of the drainage pattern of the area will be
modified as a result of the mining operation. The drainage ditch
in the haul road (A) to (B) will intercept drainage from above it
on the west slope of the ridge resulting in a more concentrated
flow at point (A). A sedimentation-check pond will be constructed
near point (A) to buffer the effects of this concentration and to
reduce sediment loading. The sedimentation-check pond constructed
adjacent to the county road in conjunction with the first mining
area will continue to be maintained. Sedimentation-check pond
dams will be constructed in the gulches to the south of areas (C)
and (E) which collect the drainage from that area.
Sedimentation-check ponds are indicated on the maps by (J).
The new haul road will cross Road Gulch at approximate station
2+00. The 100 year, 24 hour storm flow for the drainage area of
Road Gulch has been computed using the Soil Conservation Service
TR-20 hydrological analysis. This flow was computed at 1045 cubic
feet per second. It has been computed that a 9 foot diameter
corrugated metal pipe on a grade of 0.035 feet/foot will carry a
flow of 1125 cubic feet per second. The summary sheet of the
computer printout and the drainage area map is attached, and the
entire printout is available on request.
The only water which may be used in association with the
processing of the gypsum is for dust control within the operation
and on the roads. This water will amount to less than 100,000
gallons per year and will be acquired from the Town of Gypsum and
transported to the site by tank truck.
EXHIBIT H - WILDLIFE INFORMATION
The area contains no known threatened or endangered species
of wildlife as designated by Federal or State agencies. Due
to the minimal vegetation on the site, the resident wildlife
population on the site is very small. A few deer and elk have
been observed traversing the area in the winter, however, there is
no evidence that more than a few individual animals "winter" in
the general area of the site.
It is anticipated that the mining and subsequent reclamation
revegetation of the site will improve the wildlife habitat by
providing more feed to the area than now exists.
JEROME F.
