Kent Gorham
Page 2
March 5, 1998
74 states that there will be no shrub standard on the grassland community re-established on the
reclaimed surface mine. A statement to clarify that the shrub strip seeded "plots" will be sampled
distinct from the seeded grassland area would avoid misinterpretation.
4. The Division noted that a statement found on approved page 2.05-76 (rev. 4121!97) asserts that
"The surface mine area will be reclaimed as grassland only." This statement need be revised to
incorporate that shrub plots will be included as well.
Kent, this concludes my review. It appears that Lorencito Coal Company has made a concerted effort to
incorporate the CDOW's recommendations regarding location of shrub plots. I do not know if the CDOW
will be satisfied with the proposed woody stem density standard of 500 stems per acre in the
"concentrated" shrub plots. 1 do not see an inherent problem with this proposed standard.
M:\coal\jh b\96084tr2. wpd
