Kent Gorham <br />Page 2 <br />March 5, 1998 <br />74 states that there will be no shrub standard on the grassland community re-established on the <br />reclaimed surface mine. A statement to clarify that the shrub strip seeded "plots" will be sampled <br />distinct from the seeded grassland area would avoid misinterpretation. <br />4. The Division noted that a statement found on approved page 2.05-76 (rev. 4121!97) asserts that <br />"The surface mine area will be reclaimed as grassland only." This statement need be revised to <br />incorporate that shrub plots will be included as well. <br />Kent, this concludes my review. It appears that Lorencito Coal Company has made a concerted effort to <br />incorporate the CDOW's recommendations regarding location of shrub plots. I do not know if the CDOW <br />will be satisfied with the proposed woody stem density standard of 500 stems per acre in the <br />"concentrated" shrub plots. 1 do not see an inherent problem with this proposed standard. <br />M:\coal\jh b\96084tr2. wpd <br />
