Mount
Subject: Cooley Gravel Company/Morrison Quarry
Permit No. M-71-21/Amendment No. 4
Request for Technical Revision
Gentlemen:
R~t^r=niED
MAY 2 ~ 1996
Division of Minerals ti Geology
__.~-Od 1
n~~cof ,`r-a758
On behalf of CAMAS/Cooley Gravel Company, Haley & Aldrich is writing ul request a
Technical Revision to the current amended permit for the subject facility. This letter includes a
description of the proposed revision, a brief discussion of the background and rationale for [he
request, and a Technical Revision fee check of $150.00 from CAMAS/Cooley.
The proposed revision request consists of moving the permitted Limits of Mining to coincide
with the permitted Limits of Disturbance along the entire eastern boundary of the Central
Quarry portion of the facility extending from the haul road on the north to the. Unnamed
Drainage No. 1 to the south. Currently there exists a 50 ft separation between the Limits of
Mining and the Limits of Disturbance in this area that was designed to provide an active buffer
oEEn~s zone that could be used to accommodate possible localized slope instability problems [hat have
Bostcm occurred historically in this part of the quarry, if necessary.
Mnssarlnratfs
Cleveland A recent slope instability occurrence and repair have brought active mining to the Limits of
orrio Mining along a portion of the eastern boundary of the Central Quarry. CAMAS/Cooley wishes
Hartford to extend the Limits of Mining outward in case future activities require excavation within the
Cur,rircrirur buffer zone. This request 1) results in no change to the currently permitted acreage, which is
Los~\ngeles based on the Limits of Disturbance, 2) falls well within the operator's property boundary, and
Cnli/unrin 3) allows CAMAS/Cooley to remain in compliance if minor additional remedial excavation is
Manchester warranted.
Neu Hnmpshirr
Portland We reviewed [he backgro•,uld leading to [his request with DMG staff during a meeting held at
A1nirie your offices on 15 May 1996. To summarize we offer the following list of highlights:
Rcxhester
N¢n Ynrk • A slope failure occurred near the top of the Central Quarry East Highwall several years
San I~randscu ago as a combined result of unfavorable geology (faulted rock and daylighting joints)
Cvrr)on,ia and extensive bench backfill for reclamation.
Washington
Dish~irt nj Colurubin G:\,'ROlERS\'_W00\On5LL09fi00.2IX
r',~,w„~ m.y.w„m.,
