Walther
E.ecmwp Dueac~
M¢hael B. Long
Division Direrror
The Division of Minerals and Geology hereby issues no[ice,in accordance with Title 34, Article 33, Section 118,
Paragraph 3, of the Colorado Revised Statutes, that on May 29, 2001, an application to revise coal mining
operations at the Bowie No. 2 Mine was considered complete for the purposes of filing. All review and comment
periods as provided in the Act and the Regulations initiate from [his date of filing.
Approval of this permit revision would increase the permit boundary to the west by 560 acres and allow for
longwall mining west of the present mining, and west of the main fault, but just east of Terror Creek.
Additionally-, it is being proposed that one gob vent borehole and its associated light use road would be
constmcted. All 560 proposed additional acres are on Federal land and, with this approval, would bring [he
remainder of the Iron Point Tract Federal Coal Lease into the Bowie No. 2 permit. A portion of the proposed
mining had previously been approved as retreat mining of a room and pillar operation.
Larry Routten of the Division had contacted you on April 18, 2000 concerning the possibility of the Bowie No. 2
Mine conducting underground coal mining near or beneath the Curecanti-RiFle 230/345-KV transmission line.
With this proposed action, underground mining would come within about 1200 feet of the transmission line, and
the effects from subsidence even closer than that. Enclosed is a copy of a portion of the mine plan map.
The Underground coal mining operation is on land located approximately 5 miles Northeast of Paonia, Colorado.
The permit area is further described as follows:
Portions of Sections 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 14, 15, and 16, Township 13 South, Range 91 West of the 6th P.M.
Portions of Sections 33 and 34, Township 12 South, Range 91 West of the 6th P.M.
The above-mentioned tracts of land are shown on USGS 7.5 minute Quadrangle map of Bowie.
A copy of the revision application is available for public inspection at the Paonia Public Library, 140 Grand
Avenue, Paonia, CO 81428, and at the Division office. For additional information, to provide written comments,
or to request an informal conference, contact the Division of Minerals and Geology, Room 215, 1313 Sherman
Street, Denver, Colorado 80203, (303) 866-3567, within thirty (30) days after the last public notice in [he Uelta
County Ltdependent.
Sincerely,
,3bset~sh
Environmental Protection Specialist Enclosure cPR-os_clveeoaz_»D zoolossl _1lnaa3 Ant.dne
