~ • length of the cave:ms. Recent technology developments in drilling long horizontal holes
in excess of 6601't indicate that cavem lengths of up to 1500 ft are possible. We see no
stability reason to limit the length of the cavems.
• Pillar dimensions between long prismatic cavems should be increased to accotnmodate
potential drift in the horizontal drilling and to maintain a minimum upper pillar dimension
of 30 ft. Tktis requires a minimum spacing between horizontal boreholes of 88 ft.
• The above present specific recommendations forcylindricalcavem dimensions, prismatic
cavern length, and prismatic cavem spacing. The following lists additional actions/e-
valuations that should be undertaken to improve the confidence in the solution cavity
design.
- The core from adjoining core holes should be inspected and tested for strength and
deformabiliry to enhance the database for design. Limited coring should be com-
pleted on future core to confum previous test data.
- A thetutomixhanical analysis should be completed to evaluate the heat loss to the
• fomtadon and the thermally-induced stresses around the caverns.
:t ~ - Solution ca~rities should be developed on a wide spacing (at least every other one)
to allow monitoring of performance and cavem development. Once cavem shape
and intermediate term stability has been established cavern development between
the initial cavems can be completed
•
,j. F. T.
