Non-Technical Descriptions <br />Soil Survey Area: 625 EL PASO COUNTY AREA, COLORADO <br />Map unit: 3 Ascalon sandy loam, 3 to 9 percent slopes <br />Description Category: SOI <br />The Ascalon soil is deep and well drained. It formed in mixed alluvium and eolian <br />material on uplands. Typically, the surface is sandy loam about 8 inches thick. The <br />subsoil is sandy clay loam about 22 inches thick. The substratum is sandy loam or loam <br />y sand. Permeability is moderate. Available water capacity is moderate. Effective <br />rooting depth is 60 inches or more. Surface runoff is slow to medium and the hazards <br />of erosion and soil blowing are moderate. The main limitation is the susceptibility <br />to erosion. <br />Map uni[: 84 Stapleton sandy loam, 8 to 15 percent slopes <br />Description Category: SOI <br />The Stapleton soil is deep and well drained. It formed in sandy alluvium derived from <br />arkosic bedrock. Typically, the surface layer is sandy loam about 11 inches thick. The <br />subsoil is gravelly sandy loam about 6 inches thick. The substratum is gravelly <br />sandy loam and gravelly loamy sand. Permeability is rapid and available water <br />capacity is moderate. Effective rooting depth is 60 inches or more. Runoff is medium <br />and the hazard of water erosion is moderate.
