' December 1986 3
1,2 Purpose and Scope

863-2052
The site investigation described in this report was performed
with the purpose of confirming or modifying (if necessary) the
assumptions and results of the previous excess spoil slope
stability analyses. The scope of the field investigation and
associated analyses was outlined in our proposal to Yampa Valley
Coal Corporation dated August 20, 1986. Tasks involved, which
are in response to concerns raised by the MLRD, are briefly
described as follows:
1) Characterization of geotechnical conditions at five
representative locations near the toe of the proposed
excess spoil placement areas through a program of soil,
rock, and spoil material sampling;
2) Monitoring of ground-water conditions in the vicinity of
the borings;
3) Reconnaissance of excess spoil placement areas to iden-
tify any adverse geologic conditions which could
potentially affect spoil stability;
4) Laboratory classification testing to determine whether
the materials sampled are similar to the assumed mate-
rials whose properties were used in the slope stability
analyses;
5) Evaluation of the capacity of underdrains to handle
estimated flows and development of filter specifications
to prevent clogging of the drains; and
6) Performing new slope stability analyses if necessary due
to weak foundation materials being encountered or
ground-water conditions being different than previously
assumed.
Golder Associates
