EXHIBIT I -Soils Information
The proposed permit area is a series of small gravel ridges sparsely covered by cedar pinion
and sagebrush. The gravel ridges [o be mined run generally east from off the larger north
south trending ridge to the west. The graveUcobble deposits lie above the Mancos
Shale/weathered shale in thicknesses from a few to greater than 50 feet. Soil/topsoil occurs
intermittently across the site from 0 to 60 inches and there is no distinctive overburden
between the soil and the gravel deposit. Slopes are steep to very steep (greater than I S%).
Operations at the site will be conducted using facia( extraction of [fie gravel deposits off [he
slope after reserving existent topsoil in the perimeter buffer topsoil stockpile areas. No
overburden or waste rock [o be removed above the gravel to be mined. Any surface soil types
will be reserved for reclamation and stockpiled accordingly. A wetlands area will not be
disturbed during operations at the site and will be protected by silt fencing and other Best
Management Practices (BMP's).
The site, as mapped and described by [he U.S.D.A. Soil Conservation Service report of June
4, 2001, consists of eroded stream terraces with a skeletal overburden of soil. Soils on [he site
range from 0 to 60 inches and are described as Steep Shallow Clay Loam P.J. Gravel/cobble
till deposits underlie the surface soils from a few fee[ to over 50 fee[ in thickness along [he
western north south trending ridge. The deposits become thinner to the east along the smaller
west/east trending ridges and along [he small wetland area tin the south. An advance copy of
the curzen[ NRCS/IJSDA soil type and site inspection records for the Gray Pit #2 are attached.
Topsoil will be stripped and stockpiled at the perimeter buffer zones/topsoil stockpile area for
use in subsequent reclamation activities. If topsoil stockpiles are to be left for more than
(growing season, they will be seeded with [he USDA recommended seed mix via broadcast
method.
