The following USDA Soil Conversation Service species seed mix, planting methods and time
of planting recommendations will be followed. Planting methods and recommendations to
be followed are contained in the attached Colorado State University -Tri River Area News
Service document, Recommended Practices for Reclamation Sites in the Tri-River Area.
Recommendations for seed types and methods were provided by The Shavano Soil Conservation
District.
Seed Mix - Snecies Varie PLS Rates per acre % Soecies in Mix PLS rate Species/ac
Drill B/cast
l)GalletaGrass Viva 3.0 32.8 3.0 6.0
2) Crested Wheatgrass Ephriam LS 16.4 LS 3.0
3} Sand Dropseed - 0.05 0.55 0.05 0.[
4) Canby Bluegrass Canbar 0.45 4.9 0.45 0.9
5)Indian Ricegrass - 3.125 34.2 3.125 6.25
6) Fottrwing Saltbush -- L0 10.9 1.0 2.0
Total: 9.125 Ibs/ac 155.125 Lbs for 17 acres reclamation
The re-vegetation (seed mix) has been reviewed by the DOW and is the standard mix
recommended by The Shavano Soil Conservation District. Mr. Ron Harthan at the Montrose
district of the DOW was contacted concerning the DMG Staff suggestion [hat in addition to the
recommended seed mix some sage and bottle brush be added as well. Mr. Harthan indicated that
DOW would no[ require any additional seed, however, the applicant will add both sage and
bottle brush at the rate of 1.OPLS/acre to the recommended mix in order to establish a more
variegated forage mix. Mr. Harthan agreed that the addition of sage and bottle brush to the mix
at the rate of 1.0 PLS/acre would be sufficient.
After replacement of topsoil on areas scheduled for reclamation, seedbeds will be prepared using a
disc type plow or spring rake harrow. Seedbeds will be firm and clean tilled. The seeding
operation shall be by drill method. After seed application seedbeds will be mulched and crimped
stated below in (fl(iii), at a rate of 1000#/acre; weed control will be as necessary. Recommended
seedbed preparation date is late June with July 1 to IS recommended for seeding. Dormant
seeding recommendations are from October l5 to April I5. Early October, just prior to the fast
hard freeze is recommended as the most appropriate time for dormant seeding. Seeding of
stockpiled topsoil for stabilization will be broadcast and raked by hand using the same
recommended seed mix as above at. Any other areas requiring broadcast seed application will be
done at twice [he recommended drill application rate.
(e) Plan or schedule indicating how and when reclamation will take place
(i) An estimate of the periods of time which will be required for the various stages or
phases of reclamation.
As stated above, a total of 17.94 acres contained within Phase I and 16.0 acres th Phase 2 will be
ultimately disturbed by mining activities. The undisturbed area (6 acres) will consist of wetland
areas. At [his point in time, including the proposed it is estimated that the life of the mine at the
site will be from 20 [0 50 years.
