3. Erosion Control
• Four (4) to six (6) foot high berms are placed between the gently sloping surfaces which
have been reclaimed and the areas being actively mined or not yet reclaimed to prevent
wind erosion. In addition temporary berms aze constructed as needed by a grader to
divert surface runoff water.
Erosion control for the landfilled CKD is accomplished through the application o1'high-
pressure water sprays. The added moisture on the CKD forms a hazd crust, which helps
prevent erosion of the CKD from the wind.
4. Wildlife Exposure Assessment
The Wildlife Assessment completed by Dr. Steve Martin was submitted to the M1~RB in
January of 1999.
In addition to Dr. Martin's report an assessment by State of Colorado Division of
Wildlife was completed and forwazded to the MLRB and Holnam.
Although both reports indicate that the risk is minimal if any to wildlife, the areas are
inspected on a daily basis by Quarry personnel. Holnam will take under consideration
• installation of a chain-link fence around the ponds or other feasible means of precluding
any wildlife or human beings from entering the pond should such action become
necessary.
5. CKD Sampling and Analysis
A daily random sample of CKD is taken when the truck hauling the CKD to the dump
site is being loaded. This sample is analyzed for alkalis and sulfur content. Retains from
the daily sample aze put together to form a composite which makes up a quarterly sample,
which is then analyzed for Routine Oxides, Total Metals and Metals (TCLP Results
PPM). Up to date results for the quarterly samples are attached as Exhibit C.
This sampling method is a standard procedure in the handling of CKD and will amtinue
to be implemented in the future. This will ensure an ongoing geo-chemical evaluation on
the CKD and will assure that the nature of the material to be placed in the disposed azea
remains consistent in terms of the leachable chemical composition.
•
