Mr. James Dilly
February 25, 1994
Page 2
highway and have both livestock and farm machinery that hae to cross the highway.
Over the past ten years, the problem has become a very dangerous situation. We
no longer can move livestock across the highway due to the traffic, and it is
extremely difficult to move machinery. Traffic is a problem not just in the
summer with all of the tourists, but due to the increased construction in the
Ridgway/Telluride areas, Montrose hae become a service center, and commuter
traffic ie extremely heavy year around.
The location of the mining operation is very close to the Country Village
RV Park. This park caters to summer tourists and RV's and in itself creates
traffic problems of ingress and egress from the highway. With the addition of
gravel trucks in the numbers that United has proposed, the problem will become
a death trap to unsuspecting motorists on Highway 550. Even with the proposed
turnout lanes, the problems associated with the trucks pulling on and turning
into the property will be truly one of the moat dangerous places in western
Colorado and will add to the already unsafe highway.
Other issues of concern will be the air pollution, noise pollution, and the
destruction of wetlands, wildlife habitat, and water concerns, including wells
and ditches. There are many wells and springs in the surrounding areas which
will have very likely chances of being destroyed. People that live in this area
have selected this area because it is well known as one of the nicest areas in
Montrose County. With the addition of the gravel mining operation, this area
will be negatively impacted. Land values will be negatively affected by the
operation. This is very unfair to all of the surrounding neighbors of the
proposed site.
We recognize the need for gravel operations in Montrose County, and
understand the freedoms of others. However, when the action of one has such
serious repercussions to many others, careful consideration and judgment should
be used. United Companies does not live in the Uncompahgre Valley, nor are they
from the Uncompahgre Valley, nor do they care about the Uncompahgre Valley or
they obviously would have used better judgment in selecting a site for their
gravel operation.
We respectfully request your careful consideration and judgment regarding
the approval of this Application for Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Permit for
Regular (112) Operation submitted by United Companies of Mesa County, Inc.
Respecptf~ully ;/(/y/o~~u~r,,~,,,
~0 / / 4~~d~~~~~CvLi
Ror 6 KatlAty Holma~
