Lochhead
Ezecutive Director
lial D. Simpson
State Engy'neer
The above referenced Technical Revision proposes to revise underground coal mining operations.
I was not provided a copy of the engineering report as requested. However, the following potential
water resource impacts were reviewed after a discussion with Larry Oehler of your office.
There's apparently been some mention of relocating a company gaging station sometime in the
future to monitor flow on a tributary of Cottonwood Creek. There's no diversion of state waters
nor application to beneficial use, so that water resource impacts are not an issue.
2. There are apparently no new diversions of water proposed and no additional uses of water being
identified which might result in a water resource impact.
3. There is apparently a proposal to change the discharge point of pumped mine water sometime
in the future. The current discharge was identified as occurring on the west edge of the SW1/4,
Sec. 34, T10S, R98W, 6th P.M. directly to the Colorado River of approximately 250 gpm. The
proposed change is to change the discharge point of approximately e0 gpm to a point in the
NE7/4, Sec. 11, T11S, R98W, 6th P.M. There are no intervening water rights nor gaging stations
which might be adversely impacted along the subject reach of the Colorado River.
4. Discharges at the southern point in Sec. 11 may, in fact, be of a better quality than water pumped
from the mine from the northern point. The subsequent discharge of better quality water will
enhance existing downstream beneficial uses.
In conclusion, there are apparently no adverse water resource impacts associated with the
proposed revision as conveyed to me by Mr. Oehler.
Sincerely,
Chuck Roberts
Professional Engineer III
CGR/jmg:5009
