342-4 Critical Area Planting
hfulching
Critical area plantings shall be mulched where rapid establishment of seeded
species is essential, or where or.e or more of the fol2owin~ factors are likely
to cause Failure o: the planting, as determined by the responsible technician.
1. Low of erratic precipitation
2. Droughty or slowly permeable soils
3. High soil temperatures
4. Erosive soils
5. Drying winds
(ti~are need for mulching has been determined, follow standard and specifications
for "Clulching" (484). Cover crops or crop residues produced on the site will
satisfy mulching requirements if present in sufficient quantity to provide
needed soil protection and moisture conservation.
Planting trees, shrubs and vines
1. Planting of woody plants must be done in lace winter or early spring before
bud burst.
2. Roots shall be kept moist at all times before planting.
3. Roots should be spread out as close to natural position as possible during
planting.
4. Holes shall be deep and wide enough to accommodate seedlings without bending
roots.
5. Stock should be set tine same depth as~in the nursery or slightly deeper.
In no case should a plan[ be see shallower than it was in the nursery.
b. Soil shall be packed well around roots until seedling cannot be easily pulled
from [he ground. Care should be taken to eliminate all air pockets in the
soil around the roots.
7. Plants sh.;11 be a•acered ac planting time.
Supplemental water for establishment of plantings
1. Seeded plantings. In low rainfall areas, where water 'is available and where
rapid establishment is needed, irrigation of new seeding should be performed
during the firs[ growing season. Water should be applied at approximately
1-week intervals, at a race of 3/4 - 1 inch per application, when rainfall
is deficient for plant development.
2. Woody~lantings. Woody transplants should be watered at time of planting,
Followed by application of at least 1 gallon oer plant per c.•eei:, applied
to the soil at the base of the plant during the first growing season.
USDA/SCS/Colorado-7/81 TGN A170
