5 December 2000
Liane Mattson
USFS Paonia Ranger District
Lmatison ~ fs. fed. us
Gregory Hunt
Bowie Resources Ltd.
GhuntbbcC~aol.com
RE: Access required to holes drilled this field season (2000)
Liane;
The following holes were completed as long term monitoring wells:
• BRL-IP-00-65A (also known as site 10) Competed above the D-Seam
• BRL-IP-00-66A (also known as site 8) Completed below the D-Seam
• BRL-IP-00-67 & 67A (also known as site 7) Completed above, below, and in the D-Seam
These wells were cotttpleted as groundwater monitoring wells as mandated by Colorado Division of
Minerals and Geology. Quarterly water samples are required to be taken from all of these holes and due to
the depth to water, truck mounted equipment will be required to collect the samples. Four wheel drive
vehicular access is required al all sites. The roads to the sites as presently established will suffice for
access. BRL is willing and happy to cooperate with the USFS to restrict access to these sites to only times
that monitoring is required.
Hole BRL-IP-00-66, a twin to hole BRL-iP-00-66A (also located at site 8) was completed as a gob vent
borehole. A 6-inch casing was cemented from approximately 100 feel above the D-Seam up to the
surface to conduit methane from the seam during mining. A plug was placed into the top of this hole to
prevent gas from Mowing from the hole until the plug is removed at a future date.
As it turns out there is some question regarding the need to use this hole as a gob vent hole and thus the
final status of surface access is likewise in question. Should the hole be ultimately used as a vent hole a
typical surface assembly will be installed.
A typical GVB surface assembly consists of a gate valve, check valve, and Flame arrestor (all 6 inch PVC).
The Flame arrestor has a vent pipe extending 10 feet above ground. A 6 (oot high steel than link fence
approximately 12 feet by 12 feet is professionally installed around the assembly to prevent damage or
tampering from persons and or animals.
If this hole is not required as a gob vent hole then it could he plugged and reclaimed. However since the
twin of this hole BRL-1P-00-66A is located a Few feet from it and access For sampling is required of the
twin hole it seems a moot point to determine the final status of the gob vent hole at present.
Nancy should have received a request for special use permit covering these same three drill sites.
Please call should there be additional questions.
Greg Hunt
Cc: Bill Bear
