Technical Revision No. 85
June !5, 1998
Page 2
around June 1995. The casing in this well appears to have sheared about 75 feet
from the top (likely due to local landslide activity) and the well is not providing
reliable data. MCC has also completed mining in this area and does not have plans
to mine in this area in the future.
B-32 -This well was completed in the Barren Member above the F-seam in 1978,
and appears to be damaged. This well is clearly not needed in the monitoring
program any longer, as this well is located in a meadow upslope of the West Elk
Mine site, an area in which MCC has long since mined and has no future plans to
mine.
SOM 38-H-1 -This well is also a Barren Member well completed in 1982, and
appears to be damaged. It is located in the vicinity of the very first longwall panel
mined in 1992, and MCC has no future plans to mine in this area again.
JMB-12 -This well is located in the Jumbo Mountain permit revision area and
completed in the B-seam during 1993. The well was mined through with the 9NV1/
longwall panel in March 1997 and is no longer functional. MCC has completed
mining in this area and has no future plans to mine in this area again.
At this time, MCC is not prepared to propose replacement wells. MCC has
discussed with David Berry and Mike Boulay of the Division, our plans to retain Dr.
Alan Mayo to evaluate MCC's entire monitoring program. The gathering of data for
this evaluation is currently underway and will be completed in the fall. Based on the
data collected, Dr. Mayo will provide information to support MCC's future proposal
to the Division to improve MCC's current hydrology monitoring program to
adequately evaluate any impacts from mining. However, MCC believes that the
above wells should be removed from our monitoring program at this time, as the
wells are not providing reliable data.
Please call if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
hristine E.
