This proposal is to
expand mining activities to two additional areas totaling 31 acres in size.
The northernmost, larger, amendment addition consists mostly of a grass and shrub-covered
hillside. There is a small drainageway along its southern edge which supports some: fairly large
cottonwood trees. Grasses on the hillside are dominated by smooth brome, anon-native grass
with moderate value to wildlife. Native grasses are present in places also. A fair amount of
rabbitbrush is present, especially on the eastern end of the parcel. One significant patch of a
larger shrub is present on this hillside. All in all, this azea is moderately good wildlife habitat
and the loss of habitat value due to this project will be significant, although temporary. It is
important that reclamation and revegetation of this hillside succeeds and includes :a reasonable
mix of mostly native grasses ;~ shrubs since the existing shrub component is sigtuficant. No
revegetation plan was included in the information I received. It would certainly be desirable to
save the lazger cottonwoods along the southern edge of the property, but if they cannot be
retained, re-planting of cottonwoods in a nearby location (perhaps near the lake) is important.
Disturbance of the ground surface should not be done during bird nesting season (spring/eazly
summer) to avoid destroying active nests and killing nestlings, which is in violation of Ftsieral
law.
The smaller parcel to be added by this amendment, located east of the current plant site, has
already been heavily disturbed and has little value to wildlife. Reasonable reclamation there
would be an improvement.
I hope this information is helpful, please let me know if you have any questions.
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, James S.
