West Elk Drill Pads, Panels 18 to 24, Cultural Repott
RESULTS
A total of 560 acres was surveyed for the presence of cultural resources. This included all level to
gently sloping ridgetop areas and all drainage bottoms within the designated drainages. Field
conditions were good for the discovery of cultural resources, and the project azea did not contain any
substantial aeeas of Holocene deposition that might contain buried cultural resources. The canyons
and gulches have fairly steep gradients, ranging from 10% to 25%, and much of the survey area in
these settings is characterized by large boulders, bedrock blocks, unconsolidated slumps and
mudflows, and entrenched drainage channels. Many locations on the Flatiron appear favorable for
campsites at first glance, but there are no reliable natural sources of water in the area. No cultural
materials or features were found in the project area.
EVALUATION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
" The project area does not contain any known significant cultural resources. Therefore, the proposed
~':,
undertaking will not adversely impact any significant historic properties. Cultural resource clearance
is recommended for the project as surveyed.
REFERENCES CITED
r,;:;.;
`"•:1 Mehls, Steven F., 1984, Colorado Mountains Historic Content.
