`~~ "' Ill 1111111111111111
~~~°~4'~ ~ STATE OF COLOI~AUU 9
Roy Romer, Governor
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
DAVID C. SHELTON, Dlreetor
July 20, 1987
Mr. Dennis Conn
West Elk Coal Co
Box 591
Somerset, CO 81434
RE: Mt Gunnison No 1 Proposed Decision (C-80-007) Technical Revision No. 54
(Reduction-Hydrology Monitoring)
Dear Mr. Conn:
The Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division proposes to approve your
technical revision application (reduction-hydrology monitoring) for the Mt
funnison No. 1 Mine (our File C-80-007). Notice of the proposed decision will
be published as soon as possible. The publication will initiate the ten (10)
day public comment period for the Division's decision.
One issue which we discussed as a part of this revision review process was the
resumption of monitoring at Horse Creek, South Prong and Beaver Reservoir
prior to mining beneath these areas. Currently WECC does not plan to permit
mining in these areas for several years and/or a few permit terms. At that
time the Division would suggest that WECC plan to monitor three times
corresponding to the start of spring runoff, peak runoff, and low flow for
flow, pH, E.C., temperature, total manganese, total iron, 7DS and TSS prior to
mining.
If you have any questions, please contact me.
Sincerely,
Susan Mowry
Reclamation Specialist
4051G
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203-2273 Tel.
