Memo to Jim Stover
March 5, 2004
Excavation of the B-seam box cut indicated approximately 70% of the rocks encountered were less than or
equal to the 5-ft cube size. The largest rock encountered in the excavation measured about 22 ft by 12 ft by
12 ft. The superintendent in charge of the excavation noted that many times the larger rocks encountered in the
excavation were somewhat broken and fractured in to smaller fragments. These larger rocks tended to be more
rectangular in shape.
Observations on the slope below the channel sandstone outcrop indicated that the majority of the blocks that
had apparently traveled the longest distance downhill were those less than 5-ft in overall size. Large rocks in the
talus slope tended to be more rectangular in shape.
Data from the more detailed field investigation of joint planes on the outcrop are plotted in the diagrams below.
Thinly Five measurements were taken from South to North along the outcrop.
~= Al,ovG ^tF~~ce ~~te C
~--
S, Above Gr ~~ce ,~Te ~
E~~o, are
~IaE JCAirEP rt°i ~n = ~.
FpSE OIAGPPM
Du.er Lrt~e lit 1'.
