4- 31
PROTECTION AND CONTROL
During mining operations, control and protection measures will be implemented to protect
wildlife resources existing in the mine area. Measures taken will be focused primarily at limiting
disturbance and destruction resulting from increased human and mechanical activities. Specific
measures to be initiated are as follows:
Access to the mine area and surrounding properties will be limited to mine employees
and mine visitors in the company of mine personnel for business purposes only. Multiple
gate systems and trespass signs are already in place at the mine site.
o Mine site access is limited to one point for all mine traffic reducing the area of activities
and potential for road kill and disturbance.
A posted speed limit of 15 mph will be enforced on the mine property access road and
work area. This low limit will help reduce the potential for road kill within the mine area,
particularly during the dawn and dusk high wildlife activity periods.
~ No domestic animals (.e. dogs) other than cattle from existing grazing lease rights will
be allowed to roam uncontrolled on the mine property.
~ Mine personnel will be restricted to areas of operational activity except as necessary to
perform monitoring and maintenance work.
Use of vehicles for work activity outside of designated mine operation area will be
allowed only with prior approval of the Environmental Engineer and the BLM.
Recreational vehicles will be prohibited in the permit area.
Hunting will be prohibited in the permit area except as approved by the Mine Manager.
o Any areas identified during wildlife monitoring studies as having unique or important
wildlife value G.e. raptor nesting sites, fawning areas) will be designated as restricted
areas against all activity outside of wildlife monitoring by qualified staff ecologists.
The Environmental Engineer and site security personnel will have the responsibility of
enforcing restriction and regulations to minimize disturbance to wildlife resources.
All mine site personnel will be familiarized with restrictions and regulations that are part of
this plan at the time of employment at the mine site.

M~ Volume 1 4 - 29 - 96
