Division Director
P.O. BOX 700 Natural Resource Trustee
Henderson, CO 80640
RE: Walstrum Quarry, Adequacy Review -Technical Revision No. 8, Permit M-1983-033
Class: Revision Type-Seq.: TR-8 (Fuel Storage Plan)
Dear Mr. Frei:
The Division has reviewed your technical revision request fora "Fuel Storage Plan" for the
Walstrum Quarry as requested in the Division's January 5, 2005 inspection report. The
adequacy concerns listed below will need to be resolved prior to the Division's approval of your
revision request. We request that you provide a response on or before the April 8, 2005 decision
date. Please contact us if you need additional time to prepaze an adequacy response.
1. Your proposal indicates that you will be building the storage containment berm out of road
base material available on site at the Walstrum Quarry. Please specify the percentage of clay in
the material to be used, the compacted thickness when complete, the number of lifts and
thickness of lifts to be applied, the equipment that will be used to achieve the desired
compaction, and the number of passes required to achieve the desired compaction. Please
address.
2. It appeazs that the location of the fuel storage containment area may change as various phases
of the mine plan aze completed. Please provide a plan view map of the quarry showing the initial
location of the fuel storage area, and height and length from the quarry entrance.
3. Please describe how the containment surface and surrounding berm will be constructed to
ensure a level containment surface and berm of equal height around the perimeter. The Division
recommends that the operator survey the corners and center of the containment surface to ensure
a flat surface, and survey the berm crest to ensure a uniform, adequate berm height. Please
respond.
4. Given the volume of petroleum products to be stored within the containment azea, the Division
highly recommends that an initial "test run" be conducted with water to detemrine the adequacy
of the containment area and berm construction prior to relocating petroleum products to the
Office of Office of Colorado
Mined I and RerUmatinn Artive and Inartive Mines Geolo¢ical Survev
