~vr:u.;e~w~
' JAN - 61994
SHAVANO SOIL CONSERVATION DTSTRICT !;,~;,~, ;,Se;in~r.,~c;
' 101 N. Uncompahgre Ave.
Montrose, CO 81401
(303) 249-8407
' United Companies
P.O. Box 3609
'~ Grand Junction, CO 81502
Attention: Paul McGehee
The soil located on the property your company intends to mine is a
Vernal clay loam. It is a deep, well drained soil formed on
stream/river terraces. The soil is at least 60 inches deep and
t moderately fine textured. These soils are not highly susceptible to
erosion and it's structure is fairly stable. The fields are presently
irrigated and support a mixture of grasses and legumes. The Vernal
clay loam is considered prime farmland as identified in the Important
Farmland Inventory of Colorado, 1982.
' It is my understanding after our conversation that your company
intends to mine the area to at least a 25-30' depth. With this in
mind, our recommendation for reclamation would include the following:
' All soil overburden should be stockpiled and replaced over the
mined area once the mining is completed. Since there will be no
border around the edges of this property, it is our recommendation
that at least a 3:1 slope be maintained or replaced next to adjacent
landowners. This should ensure that no sloughing or slumping takes
place, and the slopes will be easier to reseed.
' Reseeding of the area should begin once the topsoil has been
spread back over the area. Seeding should be done in the late fall,
but before the ground is frozen. A seed mix of the following species
' should be drilled:
Nezpar - Indian ricegrass - 40% 7 lbs/acre
' Sodar - Streambank wheatgrass - 20% 3 lbs/acre
Paiute - Orchard grass - 10% 1 lb /acre
Galleta - 20% 3 lbs/acre

1

t
A mulch should be applied over the seeding. Straw would be ok, if it
was crimped in. There is no guarantee that the seeding will take as
this area only receives around 9 inches of precipitation a year. More
than one seeding may be needed to insure a stand of grass. If you
have any questions concernipg this report, feel free to contact the
Soil Conservation Service at 249-8407 in Montrose.
Respectfully, \`
^~~et1 ~J ~ v
Fred Miller
Shawano Soil ~ ation
District President
