I moved
to this area and bought this property 13 years ago largely because of
the natural beauty of the mountains. So I find it distressing that tMe
Quarry is spreading like a cancer and is destroying our unique and
irreplaceable natural beauty. If this is allowed to continue, I know
that future generations will ask and wonder, "Why did they let them
do it:'
Almost equally important is the fact that when the wind blows in dry
weather (which is often) we see large clouds of dust rise out of the
quarry and drift over large areas. The dust permeates our houses, our
cars, and soils everything that is outdoors. I find it difficult to
understand why our air pollution control agencies work so hard on the
subtle, difficult-to-detect sources of pollution, and then appear to pay
little attention to the obvious and massive particulate pollution that
arises from the quarry.
I'm sure you are familiar with many other reasons why those of us who
live here feel that this operation is detrimental to our area, and why
expansion would make a bad situation worse. To mention a few, the traffic
of large, heavy gravel trucks through our city is objectionable and adds
to traffic hazards; the quarry operation adds silt to water run-off and
impairs water quality; the mining operations damage and destroy wild-life
habitats and life patterns.
Most of these situations also apply to the proposed opening of the Waldo
Canyon quarry. I do hope that your office will be able to help protect
our beautiful front range area from those who would damage it.
Very truly yours,
_ ~+~aniel A. Hirsc ler, Jr.
