(MCC), West Elk Mine; Request for Depredation/Nest <br />Removal Permit. <br />Dear Mr. Garcia: <br />As we discussed during our telephone conversation of June 13, 2003, MCC is requesting this permit to <br />be expedited to facilitate the removal ofred-tailed hawk young from a nest so activities associated with <br />nearby drilling operations may continue. We would greatly appreciate an immediate response to the <br />request. MCC's FAX telephone is (970) 929-5595. <br />MCC is providing this response to questions asked on the Information Sheet for the Depredation Nest <br />Removal, 50 CFR 21.21. <br />1. Removal of one (1)red-tailed hawk young and one (1) egg from a nest located in an aspen tree <br />approximately 100 feet from a proposed light-use road. The young need to be removed so road <br />construction and drilling activities may continue. This nest is located in the SE1/4SE1/4 <br />Section 23, T. 13 S., R. 90 W., 6a' PM. The site is located within the Gunnison National Forest. <br />2. There is one red-tailed hawk nest containing one (1) young and one (1)egg. <br />The young, if required, will be taken from the nest site near Somerset, CO to Nancy Limbach at <br />the Pauline F. Schneegaf Wildlife Foundation Facility in Rifle, CO. Ms. Limbach can be <br />contacted at either (970) 876-5676 or 876-5489. <br />4. Records will be kept at Mountain Coal Company, West Elk Mine, P.O. Box 591, Somerset, CO <br />81434. <br />
