May 17, 1989
Governmor, Roy Romer
State Capitol Building
Denver, CO 80203
Re: Mining the Pikes Peak Region
Dear Sir:
• ~II ~I~II~II~I~~~ ~I~,
~ ~R~
-/~!~-
You stated in one of our publications how much you enjoyed
the beauty of our state and how we should protect our natural
environment.
Now, mining interests are again planning on extending the
blasting and removing of our mountains, as has been done
to Queen's Canyon and Black Canyon. Now Castle Concrete
wants to extend the Snyder Quarry (Black Canyon) and another
has applied for permit in Waldo Canyon.
Our great attraction to visitors is our natural beauty.
Many of us have settled here to enjoy God's Wonderland
that was millions of years in the making. Tourism is our
biggest business and they bring millions of dollars into
our state.
50 years ago Castle Concrete, whose parent company is in
Chicago, started their destruction and their attempts at
restoration is barely visible. The stately cliffs and mountains
of the front range will never be seen again. There is gravel
and building materials available on the plains.
Lately the trend is changing -from demolition and towards
preservation, and we aea2lnew or strengthened laws to protect
our area. We hope you will take a few minutes and give our
plea your attention, and that you will do whatever is within
your power to stop these mining and quarry operations.
Very truly yours,
~~~~ ~ ~~,~"~0
Mrs. Guy A.
