Kiger
Sr. Environmental Specialist
Colowyo Coal Company
5731 State Highway 13
Meeker., CO 81641
Re: Colowyo Coal Company Permit Revision
Dear Mr. Kiger:
Thank you for the information you supplied our office on the above proposed
project.
It is our understanding that archaeological site SMF402 will be impacted
by mining activities that are proposed in this permit revision. This site
was determined to need testing on December 27, 1982 in consultation with
the Office of Surface Mining. In 1984 the site was relocated with
conflicting information printed in the report and on the reevaluation form.
Based on our review of all the information concerning this site, we have
determined that testing should be completed to evaluate if the site has
qualities that would make it eligible to the National Register of Historic
Places. Testing can consist of a series of shovel probes across the site
and based on the results of these probes, excavate one to four 1 x 1 meter
test pits in the areas where subsurface potential is greatest. However,
the archaeologist undertaking the testing will be able to evaluate the best
method based on what is found on the surface of the site.
Enclosed you will find a directory of personnel and the "Archaeological
Report Guidelines" that should be followed for all reports submitted for
our review. If we may be of further assistance please contact Jim Green at
866-4674.
Sincerely,
James E. Hartmann
State Historic Preservation Officer
JEH/WJG
